"Hi there! My name is Antoine Ladouceur and Jarett was my instructor at the Art Institute of Vancouver. Boy was I lucky to have him! If I’m working as a Level Designer today it’s definitely because of his incredible support and advice. Having Jarett as an instructor was a little bit like opening a window onto the entire spectrum of game development. I felt like not only did I learn how to make good game design choices, but also how those choices would affect development overall. I learned what its like to work in a professional game development team and how to structure my work to fit well in that framework. --Overall, my first day on the job felt quite easy from everything I had learned from Jarett. He is a terrific instructor, straight to the point and very passionate about what he does and it’s definitely contagious."

NOT SURE IF YOU'RE READY?

The number one reason that most people who aspire to become game designers never achieve their goal is because they don't really try. They're either afraid of failing, afraid of being rejected, don't believe they have what it takes, would rather play games all day than make them or simply don't want it bad enough to work hard and do everything they need to make themselves hireable and break in.

...Don't be one of those people. I can tell you honestly that when I was where you are now I was afraid of failing, I was afraid of being rejected and when times got tough -- I sometimes didn't really feel like pushing through it and doing all of the work. But in the end my passion for making games won out and drove me to overcome it all. --I did it and so can you.

...

I'VE BEEN WHERE YOU ARE

Hi, I'm Jarett Metcalfe and like you 11 years ago I had a dream of becoming a Game Designer. –Now that might have been the end of the story right there, but it wasn't. I worked extremely hard and surrounded myself with incredible mentors and peers from whom I learned everything I needed to-to break into the video game industry. For me breaking into the video game industry wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. And when couldn't come soon enough so I built the best portfolio I could and a network of industry friends, peers, and mentors that I have to this day.

WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?

Because it worked! I went from zero to landing my dream job within weeks of graduating from game design college and got the entry-level Game Designer/Creative Producer role that I wanted. Since those early days I've had a lot of fun making video games. Shipping 13 titles to date, many award winning such as Need For Speed, Fight Night, FIFA World Cup, and Bomberman Live, as well as the good fortune of being able to work with literally thousands of amazing and talented people in the video game industry. During this time I have worked in various design and production roles ( Franchise Development Director, Creative Producer, Game Designer, Narrative Designer, Game Writer, and 3D Artist) and have managed hundreds of people across all disciplines; including hiring and career managing designers, managers, programmers and artists.

Along the way I discovered that I really enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others succeed and have spent the last two years mentoring game design students at the Vancouver Film School and teaching portfolio development and game design at the highly rated Art Institute of Vancouver. It is in this spirit that I am now taking things online to connect with and help people around the world who are aspiring to become Game Designers and Level Designers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS THIS COURSE ACTIONABLE?

Absolutely! Everything taught in this course is specifically targeted at giving you the knowledge and skills you need to build a successful game design or level design portfolio.

HOW MUCH MENTORING TIME Will I NEED?

It depends! Everyone is different and will want or need to hone in on particular course topics. I offer different mentoring packages to help you with what you specifically need.

For those of you that are not sure how much mentoring time you will need in the future and want to play it by ear you can purchase the Lectures & Exercises only package now and either upgrade to a mentoring package later, or purchase the separate a la carte GAME DESIGN MENTORING course. The GAME DESIGN MENTORING course allows you to ask any question you like about your portfolio, networking, career coaching, games, and the game industry in general. For more information on the GAME DESIGN MENTORING course please contact me at [email protected]

HOW DOES 1 ON 1 MENTORING WORK?

This course offers different mentoring packages--each differentiated by the number of hours of support that will be available. Other than that the kind of mentoring you can expect from each package will be the same.

Overall 1 on 1 mentor sessions can be used to talk about anything course content related including topics such as career coaching, networking and job applications.

As part of a mentoring package you can expect your mentor to review portfolio exercises you've submitted onto the course Google Drive and give constructive feedback on how it can be improved. Detailed instructions on how to submit your work and schedule meetings with your mentor are included inside of the course. A high level overview is as follows:

  • Students will submit their portfolio course exercise work to the confidential class Google Drive and send the instructor a text via Slack to let me know it's there.
  • Students will then setup a time in the scheduling application to discuss their portfolio work submission and receive feedback. Time slots available will show up in the scheduling calendar to make it easy to find a time that works well for you.
  • The instructor will then review the work submission and relay all feedback during the one on one session you have scheduled with them online.
  • Mentor feedback will be given via one on one online via one of the following methods: Skype, Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, whichever one works best for you.
  • For quick questions about the course or an exercise Slack will be used to communicate text messages between students and the instructor. This way we can easily keep track of our conversations and get back to each other as quickly as possible.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I SETUP A MENTORING SESSION AND MISS IT?

Once you have setup your mentoring session appointment time you'll have up until 24 hours before the appointment time to cancel the appointment. If you do not cancel within that timeframe, or fail to show up to your appointment the exact amount of time you scheduled for the appointment will be deducted from your overall mentorship time for the course -or- if it is a paid mentor session (one not included in your VIDEO GAME DESIGN PORTFOLIO course package) you will be charged for the appointment.

The reason for this is that you are blocking up the appointment schedule and making it hard for other students to find a time that works for them, as well as continuing to utilize my time as I need to ensure that I am 100% available to you during your appointment time (whether you show up or not). Please keep in mind that I won't know if you're intending to show up or not until the appointment time is over! --The best way to think about it is like we are playing a game together, we always need to be respectful of one another and always play fair!

WHEN DOES THIS COURSE START AND FINISH?

The course starts now and ends when you're done! It is a completely self-paced online course - you decide when you start and when you finish.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO TAKE THIS COURSE?

After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices that you own.

WHAT IF I'M UNHAPPY WITH THIS COURSE?

We would never want you to be unhappy! If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact us in the first 30 days and we will give you a full refund.

WHAT IF I WANT TO UPGRADE MY COURSE PACKAGE?

If you would like to upgrade to a different package please contact me and I'll see what I can do!

DO I HAVE TO MAKE 3 GAMES FOR MY PORTFOLIO?
